Head coach Karl Smesko has guided the Atlanta Dream to the WNBA Finals, Fox News and AP News reported. CBS Sports reported that the championship series begins on Saturday afternoon, with the Dream facing off against the Golden State Valkyries. [1][2][4]

The WNBA will crown a first-time champion this season, according to CBS Sports. The Valkyries are in their second season after entering the league as an expansion team in 2025, while the Dream reached the Finals in 2010, 2011 and 2013, suffering sweeps in each appearance. The Valkyries eliminated the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in the semi-finals, while the Dream defeated the New York Liberty. [2]

Smesko joined the Dream after serving as the founding head coach of the Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball team from 2002 to 2024. Fox News reported that Smesko spent less than two years away from college basketball after building FGCU from a Division II program into a Division I power that posted eight 30-win seasons. [1][6]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, the WNBA Finals series opens in California. The Dream will host their home games at Gateway Center Arena, which holds 3,500 seats for basketball, because of scheduling conflicts at State Farm Arena. [10]
