Gabby Williams scored 26 points to lead the Golden State Valkyries to a 68 to 64 victory over the Atlanta Dream in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals at Chase Center in San Francisco on Saturday, Fox News and The Guardian reported. Golden State erased a late deficit by finishing the game on a 7 to 0 run to secure a 1 to 0 series lead. [1][2]

The Dream held a three point lead with just over three minutes left before going scoreless for the remainder of the contest, according to Fox News. Fox News stated that Williams scored six free throws in the final two minutes and 15 seconds, while The Guardian reported that she made four late free throws, including two with four point one seconds remaining to secure the win. Atlanta scored only eight points in the fourth quarter. [1][2]

Prior to the series opener, Williams criticized WNBA media coverage, stating that the media has never respected her and that she has never expected them to, according to the New York Post. The New York Post reported that Williams averaged 22.7 points in the playoffs while leading Golden State to the WNBA Finals in the franchise's second year of existence. [3]

Williams was selected fourth overall in the 2018 WNBA draft by the Chicago Sky and previously won two college national championships at UConn before joining the French national team. As FTMQ News reported earlier, both the Golden State Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream are competing to win their first WNBA championship in this series. [11][14][17]
