A federal judge has issued an order indefinitely blocking the White House from banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico while their lawsuit against President Donald Trump proceeds, CNN and CNBC reported. US District Judge Tim Kelly in Washington, D.C., granted the preliminary injunction on Tuesday night. The ruling extends a previous order allowing the three media outlets to continue reporting from the White House after President Trump announced a press ban in mid-September, according to CNN and CNBC. [1][3]
Judge Kelly said that President Trump's press ban likely violated the First Amendment, CNN reported. He wrote on Tuesday that public comments from President Trump showed a likely causal link between the protected First Amendment speech of the news outlets and the revocation of their hard passes, according to CNN. [1]
The decision was also reported by msnbc.com, Reuters, Bloomberg, MS NOW, Yahoo News Singapore, and Deadline. President Trump has frequently attacked American media outlets that give him unfavorable coverage and has previously used his position to pressure outlets he dislikes, according to Wikipedia. In a separate White House development, new Press Secretary Katie Zacharia announced in her debut briefing that President Trump asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as ambassador to Greece, PBS NewsHour and ABC News Australia reported. Guilfoyle was requested to resign following allegations that she sought 100,000 dollars from a donor, according to PBS NewsHour. [6][7]
