Chancellor John Healey will outline the details of the Burnham government's first budget in the House of Commons at 12:30pm today. According to the Guardian, the Treasury has described the statement as a low-key event focused on relieving cost of living pressure. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, BBC News found that the budget will include over one billion pounds for English social and affordable housing. That package increases total funding for the 10-year homes programme above 40 billion pounds and allows local councils to borrow money at preferential rates to build housing. The budget will also establish a 1.5 billion pounds regional borrowing facility across two years. [5]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, Prime Minister Andy Burnham will also allocate 432 million pounds in added homelessness funding. This brings total funding to clear rough sleepers off the streets by Christmas to nearly 900 million pounds, fulfilling a pledge Burnham made after taking office. Shadow housing secretary Katie Lam stated that rough sleeping reached record highs under Labour. [6]
Burnham has served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Labour Party since July 2026. He was elected as the member of Parliament for Makerfield in June 2026, after serving as Mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 to 2026. [3]
