A member of the Irish Defence Forces in his 30s has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the rape of a 17-year-old girl. Independent.ie and thejournal.ie both reported that the court handed down the eight-year sentence following the incident, which occurred at the man's family home in the midlands on 26 January 2023. [1][2]
According to thejournal.ie, the teenager was introduced to the man by her stepfather on the night of the assault. The soldier agreed to drive the girl and two older women home. However, after dropping off the two older women, he brought the teenager to his own home instead. [2]
The victim recorded the rapes on her mobile phone, independent.ie reported. The man denied charges of rape, oral rape, sexual assault, and false imprisonment, later claiming that all sexual interactions between them were consensual, according to independent.ie and thejournal.ie. [1][2]
The Irish Defence Forces are the armed forces of Ireland, encompassing the Army, the Naval Service, and the Air Corps. Full-time personnel in the Permanent Defence Force are supported by the Reserve Defence Force. [3]
