A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., has heard evidence regarding possible false statements made by former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, Fox News, the New York Post, and the Daily Mail reported. The Department of Justice is investigating whether the 29 year old aide lied to Congress during her testimony before the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, according to the New York Post, the Daily Mail, and the Washington Examiner. [1][2][4][6]

The Daily Mail and CBS News report that the Justice Department is seeking a federal criminal indictment against Hutchinson. A source told the New York Post that a grand jury was empaneled earlier in the week to hear witness testimony and evidence. According to the New York Post, the investigation is being conducted under the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. [2][4][5]

Additional evidence could be presented to the grand jury as soon as next week, Fox News reported. The proceedings remain in the grand jury phase, and no final decisions have been made on whether criminal charges will be brought, a source told Fox News. [1]

Hutchinson previously served as an assistant to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows during the Trump administration. The Washington Examiner noted that she gave testimony to the defunct House select committee in June 2022, providing accounts regarding Donald Trump's actions during the Capitol riot. [4][6][10]
