Hamburg court jails two men over Iranian plot targeting Jewish leaders

A court in Hamburg has sentenced two men to prison after convicting them of espionage and attempted murder over a plot to attack Jewish leaders in Germany on behalf of Iran, DW reported on Thursday. Yahoo, DW.com, StreetInsider, and Demócrata also reported that a German court handed down prison sentences for the two men who were spying on Jewish targets. [1][2][3][4][5]

According to DW, the pair planned to attack the president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany as well as the president of the German-Israeli society. One defendant, described by prosecutors as a 54-year-old Dane with Afghan roots who received direct orders from Iran, was handed an eight-and-a-half year sentence as the mastermind of the attacks. DW further reported that the second defendant received a four-and-a-half year prison sentence. [1]

Hamburg is Germany's second-most populous city after Berlin, with a population of approximately 1.85 million people. As FTMQ News reported earlier, authorities in other European nations have also taken action against Iranian spying efforts, including charges against two Iranian men in the United Kingdom over an alleged plot against a Manchester synagogue and a trial in London involving three Iranian nationals accused of targeting journalists.
