Former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer has been arrested and charged with domestic violence and larceny-related offences in western Sydney. The Daily Mail and ABC News Australia both report that the 40-year-old was arrested on Wednesday afternoon at a cafe in Wentworth Point. ABC News Australia reports that officers from the New South Wales Police Domestic Violence High Risk Offender team carried out the arrest after investigating an alleged domestic violence incident. [1][2]

The Daily Mail reports that Mehajer was charged with domestic violence-related common assault, domestic violence-related stalking or intimidation with intent to cause fear of physical harm, and larceny greater than 15,000 dollars. The outlet notes that he is accused of stealing a 41,000 dollar gift meant for his second wedding. ABC News Australia adds that Mehajer was taken to Auburn Police Station and charged, while the Daily Mail reports that he was refused bail and spent the night in a police cell before a scheduled appearance at Parramatta Local Court. [1][2]

Mehajer was elected as a councillor for Auburn City Council in 2012. In April 2018, he was found guilty of electoral fraud after submitting false voter enrolment applications to manipulate electoral rolls. He was sentenced to 21 months in prison and served 11 months. He was later declared bankrupt in March 2018. Courts sentenced him again in April 2021 to two years and three months for lying to court, and in May 2023 to seven years and nine months for domestic violence and fraud offences. [3][5]

The latest charges come 18 months after Mehajer was released on parole on 18 July 2025. He now faces legal proceedings in Parramatta Local Court following the recent charges. [1][2][3]
