Egypt has announced a new natural gas discovery in the Mediterranean Sea, according to Euronews, AOL.co.uk, Anadolu Ajansi, and Sada Elbalad English. Euronews reported that the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced the discovery on Friday, which involves the exploratory well Nasim-1X. [1][3][4][5]
Initial estimates indicate that the reservoir at the Nasim-1X well holds around 200 billion cubic feet of natural gas, as reported by Euronews, AOL.co.uk, and Anadolu Ajansi. Euronews added that drilling and appraisal work took place at the well, which is located in the Taiba concession area. [1][3][4][5]
The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum attributed the successful discovery to increased investment and exploration activity. Euronews reported that the ministry noted an improved investment climate as well as progress in settling overdue payments to foreign companies working in the energy sector. [1]
Cairo hopes that the new natural gas discovery will help support domestic gas production and decrease reliance on energy imports, Euronews reported. Energy remains a key sector of the national economy in Egypt. [1][6]
