The government of Greenland and Danish authorities denied claims made on Wednesday by United States President Donald Trump that massive oil, gas, and mineral exploration is about to begin in Greenland. According to UPI and CNN, Greenland contradicted the assertion after Donald Trump wrote on social media that resource extraction would soon start in what he called our new and beautiful Greenland. [1][2][4][6][9][11]

UPI reported that authorities in Denmark stated that any United States resource exploration on the island must be done legally. UPI added that a security agreement signed weeks earlier between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland provides defense powers to the United States rather than business preference. Reuters also reported that Denmark insisted resource exploration must respect local laws. [1][4][5]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Donald Trump did not provide specific details about any prospective energy projects in his announcement. msnbc.com reported that Donald Trump made the social media post shortly after speaking at an event for Alaska Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, who is seeking re-election in a state where energy policy is central to politics. [1][2][16]

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark with self-government granted under an act that took effect in 2009. The island relies heavily on local coastal settlements, with Nuuk serving as its capital city. [1][6][15]
