US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the opening of a 6.6 billion dollar shipbuilding factory in Baltimore, Maryland. The Guardian and the New York Post both reported that the facility will be located at a currently unused shipyard in Sparrows Point. The New York Post noted that the site will focus on submarine production. [1][3]
The project is set to be partly funded by the United States government. However, according to The Guardian, the factory will be owned by Anduril Industries, a defense company founded by major Republican campaign fundraiser Palmer Luckey. [1]
The announcement comes as the administration pursues military expansion. In December 2025, President Trump announced the Trump-class battleship, a proposed nuclear-powered guided-missile warship intended to add nuclear-capable cruise missiles and hypersonic attack missiles to the United States Navy surface fleet.
