Retired United States Navy Vice Admiral Nancy Lacore, a Democrat, has won the election for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District. The Washington Examiner reported that the Associated Press called the race for Lacore at 6:51 p.m. on Friday evening. The Times Union, Anadolu Ajansı, NOTUS, and ThePrint all reported that Lacore was previously fired by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. [1][2][3][4][5][6]

The Washington Examiner and ThePrint both report that Lacore defeated Republican candidate Jenny Costa Honeycutt. According to the Washington Examiner, Lacore secured 49.7 percent of the vote compared to 48.6 percent for Honeycutt, with 99 percent of the votes counted. The Washington Examiner noted that the seat was previously held by Republican Representative Nancy Mace, who won reelection in 2024 by 17 percentage points before the Cook Political Report rated the race a toss-up. [1][5]

Lacore served as the 16th chief of Navy Reserve from 2024 to 2025 and as the 93rd commandant of Naval District Washington from 2022 to 2024. She also served as director of the Maritime Partnership Program for U.S. Naval Forces Europe/Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet, with additional duties as vice commander of the U.S. 6th Fleet in Naples, Italy. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Democrats secured majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections. Democratic lawmakers plan to launch aggressive oversight investigations into the Pentagon following their victories. [8]
