Bulgarians are voting in a presidential election that is taking place under the shadow of Russia's ongoing war in neighboring Ukraine, Al Jazeera reported. The election comes as the conflict has spread into the waters off the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. [1]

President Iliana Iotova, aged 61, and former caretaker prime minister Andrey Gyurov, aged 50, were leading a broad field of 27 candidates in public opinion polls before the vote on Sunday, according to Al Jazeera. Both leading candidates condemned recent lethal drone strikes in the Black Sea, although they hold differing views regarding the broader war in Ukraine. [1]

The presidency in Bulgaria remains a largely ceremonial position, Al Jazeera reported. While major policy decisions must be approved by Parliament, direct election endows the president with greater political authority. The president leads the armed forces of the nation and holds the power to sign international agreements or veto legislation. [1]

Separately, three Dominican men stated in a social media video that they were tricked by false job offers in Russia before being conscripted into the Russian military to fight in Ukraine, the New York Post reported. In related news on the war, Ukrainian and Russian officials are contemplating potential peace talks planned for November in the United Arab Emirates, according to reports by Reuters and Al Jazeera.
