Iowa Republican Senate candidate and Representative Ashley Hinson denied during a Wednesday debate that her husband works as a shadow lobbyist. The Daily Mail reported that the exchange marked the most explosive moment of the debate between Hinson and her Democratic opponent, Josh Turek. [1]

During the debate, Turek claimed that Hinson took $50,000 in taxpayer funds to pay for a luxury apartment in Washington, DC, despite being a multi-millionaire. The Daily Mail reported that Turek also accused her husband, Matt Arenholz, of operating as a shadow lobbyist. [1]

Hinson denied the allegations regarding her husband during the event. According to the Daily Mail, the 43-year-old congresswoman stated that Arenholz is an insurance agent who works out of their basement rather than a lobbyist. [1]

The debate comes as political campaigns face broader scrutiny over the use of government money. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the Democratic National Committee filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration over the alleged illegal use of $20 million in public funds for political television advertisements.
