Green Party leader Zack Polanski faces growing pressure following his defeat in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election. BBC News reported that focus after the north London vote centred on Polanski rather than the winner. Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali won the seat, succeeding Sir Keir Starmer as the local Member of Parliament. [1][2]

Sagal Abdi-Wali arrived in the United Kingdom as a child refugee from Somalia during the 1990s, BBC News reported. She grew up locally in Camden, became a local councillor four years ago, and was appointed council leader in May before winning the parliamentary seat. [1]

The defeat comes alongside internal party criticism regarding a controversial motion passed by Green Party members in Brighton that declared Zionism a form of racism. As FTMQ News reported earlier, former Green Party leader Caroline Lucas criticized Polanski for failing to show leadership after he missed the conference vote on the motion. [1][2]

Polanski has served as the leader of the Green Party of England and Wales since 2025, as FTMQ News reported earlier. He personally contested the Holborn and St Pancras by-election against Abdi-Wali before the final results were announced early in the morning at Camden Council offices. [1][2]
