A Syrian plastic surgeon is facing deportation from the United Kingdom after the Home Office revoked his refugee status, according to the Guardian. The Home Office declared that it is now safe for the surgeon and his family to return to Syria. The Guardian reported that the decision to actively remove refugee status for Syrians is thought to be the first of its kind by the department. [1]

The Home Office classified Syria as safe for refugees to return to, despite official guidance from the Foreign Office that advises against all travel to the country due to a volatile security situation. The Guardian reported that the classification also goes against advice from the refugee body of the United Nations, even as some European countries promote voluntary returns to Syria. [1]

The Home Office serves as the interior ministry for the United Kingdom and is responsible for national security, public safety, and immigration. Plastic surgery is one of 14 main surgical specialties recognized by the American College of Surgeons. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood leads the department, which recently faced criticism over restrictions placed on its refugee resettlement schemes. [3][6][7][8]

Separately, the Daily Mail reported that asylum seekers in the United Kingdom have been buying online medical sick notes to avoid Home Office interviews. An internal Home Office memo obtained by the Daily Mail revealed that officials noticed identical medical notes being added to multiple files. The notes, which cost 44 pounds from a website called Home2Lab, allow claimants to delay asylum interviews for up to six months without needing a appointment with a general practitioner. [2]
