Thousands gather for rival rallies in Portadown over Drumcree dispute

Thousands of people have gathered for rival rallies in Portadown as a stand-off over a controversial Orange Order parade reached its seventh day.

FTMQ News, written by our newsroom

Thousands of people gathered for rival rallies in Portadown, County Armagh, on October 3, 2026, as a stand-off over a parade reached its seventh day, the BBC, The Journal, and Channel 4 reported. [1][2][3][4][8]

According to The Journal, supporters of local Garvaghy Road residents began their gathering at 3:00 pm, while a separate rally supporting the Orange Order started in nearby Edgarstown at 4:00 pm. The Police Service of Northern Ireland stated that individuals blocking Garvaghy Road are participating in an unnotified and illegal protest, warning that participants will face criminal justice consequences, The Journal reported. The Journal added that roads were blocked and traffic was significantly disrupted throughout the area. [2]

The Drumcree conflict involves annual parades in Portadown, a town in County Armagh that recorded a population of 32,926 in the 2021 census. The Protestant Orange Order insists on marching its traditional route to and from Drumcree Church, but local residents consider the march through majority Catholic areas to be sectarian. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the Parades Commission allowed the Orange Order to march along Garvaghy Road for the first time in almost 30 years. The Orange Order is supported by the Democratic Unionist Party and Traditional Unionist Voice, while Sinn Féin supports the Garvaghy Road residents. [6][7][8]

The protests marked the seventh day of the dispute over the march, Channel 4 and The Journal reported. Police advised motorists to avoid Portadown due to ongoing road blockages and traffic disruption, according to The Journal. [2][4][8]
