President Donald Trump defended data centers at a midterm campaign rally in Vandalia, Ohio, on Saturday, the Hill reported. According to AP News, PBS, and the Hill, Trump held the event to support Republican candidate Jon Husted in a competitive United States Senate race. The special election will determine who completes the Senate term vacated by Vice President JD Vance. [1][3][5][9]
During the rally at a local high school, Trump argued that the United States risks losing ground in the global artificial intelligence race against China without massive data center facilities, the Hill and AP News reported. The large facilities have come under heightened scrutiny in recent years. [1][2][5]
The campaign event took place shortly after major employment changes in the region. Fortune reported that nearly 1,400 workers were laid off at a former Navistar truck factory in southwestern Ohio just three days before the rally. According to Fortune, the layoffs were large enough to basically erase an entire year of job growth in the greater Dayton area. [2][10]
Husted, a Republican former lieutenant governor, faces Democratic former senator Sherrod Brown in the Senate contest, according to Wikipedia. The Republican Party currently holds simple majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate as Trump serves his second presidential term. [8][9]
