Thieves have stolen 30,000 bottles of wine worth approximately 5 million euros, or 4.2 million pounds, from an Italian winery in Tuscany. BBC News and Yahoo News Australia both report that Italian media detailed the heist at a storage facility owned by Marchesi Antinori, one of the largest family-owned wineries in Italy. The theft occurred on Saturday while the company prepared a shipment for international customers. [1][2]

BBC News reported that at least seven masked men deactivated alarms and disabled security cameras at the site. The intruders then utilized company forklifts to load two large trucks with high-value Tuscan red wines, specifically Tignanello, Solaia, and Guado al Tasso. [1]

Renzo Cotarella, the chief executive of the Florence-based winery, told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that this was the largest theft of its kind in Italy. BBC News noted that the facility was located in Tuscany, a region where the Renaissance historically began in city-states such as Florence. [1][5]

Italy maintains a robust agricultural sector that produces premium exported goods including wine and olive oil. Investigations into the high-value theft are ongoing following the getaway in the loaded company trucks. [1][5]
