The Oyster Tavern in Cork City has reopened after an almost three year hiatus, according to the Irish Examiner. The historic venue is opening ahead of this weekend's Guinness Cork Jazz Festival. Operator Paul Whelan has taken a 25 year lease on the premises. [1]

The Irish Examiner reported that the annual rent for the building is in excess of 100,000 euros. Paul Whelan has a background in real estate and construction. He is currently reworking the well known premises, while retaining its original name. [1]

The establishment dates to 1792 and has historic ties to several merchant princes in the city. Oyster bars and saloons originally began making an appearance as distinct restaurants during the 18th century, having previously been common tavern food across Europe. [1][2]

The reopening comes as Cork prepares for its annual music celebrations. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the Cork Jazz Festival has been held annually in Cork City since 1978. This year's lineup includes original Boney M member Maizie Williams. [1][4]
