Ten alleged noncitizens were indicted on federal election fraud charges on Wednesday, the New York Post reported. The charges are part of a federal investigation dubbed Operation Protect the Vote, which authorities described as the largest voter fraud takedown in California history. [1]
Federal prosecutors accused the suspects of illegally registering to vote and casting ballots after falsely claiming to be United States citizens, according to the New York Post. The latest indictments bring the total number of defendants charged in the Southern California investigation to 28. Among those indicted on Wednesday were Alexander Muñoz and four individuals arrested on October 19. [1]
The United States government categorizes voter or ballot fraud as one of three main types of federal election crimes, alongside campaign finance crimes and civil rights violations. Voter fraud involves illegal acts such as voter impersonation, mail-in ballot fraud, double voting, and illegal voting by noncitizens. California was admitted to the Union in 1850 as the 31st state. [2][3]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, the broader federal crackdown involved grand jury indictments of foreign nationals who held citizenship in Mexico, Cambodia, and Canada. Justice Department enforcement actions in California had previously targeted noncitizens for illegally registering to vote across the state. [4]
