United States Capitol Police and the Senate Sergeant at Arms intercepted at least one envelope containing a suspicious substance that was addressed to offices of Senator Adam Schiff, UPI reported on October 18. The Democratic senator from California confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that the package was aimed at his state offices. [1]
According to UPI, Schiff condemned the mailing as an attempt to intimidate elected officials and staff. He stated that the action would not succeed and called such threats antithetical to national values. [1]
The incident comes during a surge in similar packages targeting elected officials from both political parties, UPI reported. As FTMQ News reported earlier, election offices in Ohio, Louisiana, and Oklahoma were targeted earlier in October by packages containing suspicious white powder, leading to law enforcement probes and an office closure in Baton Rouge. [1][3]
Schiff is the junior United States senator from California and has served in the Senate since 2024. He previously represented California in the United States House of Representatives from 2001 to 2024 and served in the California State Senate from 1996 to 2000. [2]
