Sudanese artists are working to save their country's culture and traditions after war destroyed studios and homes across the nation. Al Jazeera reported that visual artist and theatre director Awad Haroun, aged 45, fled his home in Al-Halfaya, Khartoum North, following the outbreak of violence. [1]
Fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary in April 2023. Al Jazeera said Haroun left his home, workspace, and tools, relocating to Port Sudan with his wife and son. He carried only two shirts, two pairs of trousers, two books, and a few torn drawing papers under the expectation that he would return soon. [1]
Sudan is a country in Northeast Africa with a population of 51.8 million people. As FTMQ News reported earlier, international leaders and institutions have previously called for renewed alliances with artists to protect human culture during times of disruption. [4][5]
Haroun lost his original home along with his materials and working tools during the conflict. According to Al Jazeera, he has been forced to rebuild his life and artistic career far from his home in the capital. [1]
