Serbian voters are casting ballots in a parliamentary election that acts as a major test for the long-standing political dominance of Aleksandar Vučić.

Voters in Serbia went to the polls on Sunday, October 25, to elect 250 members of the National Assembly. Euronews reported that more than 6.45 million people are eligible to vote in the snap parliamentary election, which features 18 electoral lists and 2,418 candidates. The vote follows the dissolution of parliament on September 9 by President Aleksandar Vučić after a government proposal. [1]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, the youth-backed Students' List is challenging the ruling Serbian Progressive Party of Aleksandar Vučić. The candidate list for the student movement is led by cardiologist Ilija Srdanovic. [2]

The election follows two years of widespread anti-corruption demonstrations in the country. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the protests first began in November 2024 after a deadly canopy collapse at a train station in Novi Sad killed 16 people. On Thursday, around 150,000 people gathered in Belgrade for a Student List opposition rally. [2][3]

The snap election is being viewed as a referendum on the political system established in Serbia over the past decade, according to Euronews. Analyst Berta López Domènech previously told FTMQ News that the election outcome is expected to be very tight. Aleksandar Vučić resigned from the presidency on September 27 to run for prime minister.
