The National Park Service announced on Wednesday that it has temporarily closed the Halemaʻumaʻu Trail and part of the Byron Ledge Trail in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, according to the New York Post. Officials took action after renewed volcanic activity and hundreds of earthquakes raised concerns about potential rockfall risks. [1]

More than 200 shallow earthquakes were recorded beneath the summit of Kīlauea over the past week, the New York Post reported, citing information from the National Park Service and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. [1]

The United States Geological Survey issued a volcanic activity notice earlier in the week for the volcano, the New York Post said. The notice reported renewed spattering at two vents following recent activity beneath the summit of Kīlauea. [1]

Park officials continue to monitor the renewed volcanic activity at the popular tourist destination to ensure visitor safety. [1]
