Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez kicked off his general election campaign in Dos Hermanas, Seville, before more than 5,000 people, Euronews reported. The election is scheduled to take place on 29 November. [1]
Euronews reported that Dos Hermanas is the largest city in Andalusia where the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party remains in power following recent regional elections. According to Alejandro Moyano, deputy secretary for Organisation of the party in Andalusia, the town holds historical significance for Sánchez, who launched his 2017 bid for the party general secretariat there, as well as his campaigns in 2019 and 2023. [1]
The election comes after widespread outrage and nationwide protests following the eviction of an 87-year-old pensioner, Maricarmen Abascal, from her Madrid flat in September, as FTMQ News reported earlier. The government subsequently approved 21 urgent housing measures, and Sánchez called the snap general election for 29 November 2026. Abascal later died on 7 October 2026. [3][4]
The prime minister of Spain serves as the official head of government, nominates ministers, and chairs the Council of Ministers to establish policy and coordinate the cabinet. [2]
