Officials see little chance of Trump meeting Kim Jong Un this year

American and South Korean officials view the chances of a meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this year as fading, the New York Post and the South China Morning Post reported. Five people with knowledge of the situation told outlets that the prospects for a summit are diminishing as Pyongyang shows little interest in diplomacy aimed at containing its nuclear program. [1][2]

Donald Trump remains eager to restart negotiations with North Korea and is the only United States president to have met a North Korean leader, according to the New York Post and the South China Morning Post. However, the United States has received no response from North Korea regarding a potential meeting. [1][2]

Time is running out to arrange a meeting ahead of a regional summit in China next month, the New York Post noted. The South China Morning Post reported that Donald Trump has downplayed the likelihood of a summit occurring next month, stating that he is not sure anybody is asking for a meeting. [1][2]

Kim Jong Un became Commander in Chief in 2011 and General Secretary of the Workers Party of Korea in 2012. He made his first international state visit to China in March 2018. [10]
