North Korea test fired two types of strategic cruise missiles designed for submarine launch on Wednesday, according to reports from France 24, The Washington Post, and WSVN. State news agency KCNA reported on Thursday that the missiles were fired into the East Sea, which is also known as the Sea of Japan. France 24 reported that state media said the launches posed no threat to neighbouring countries. [1][2][3][4][9]

The missile tests follow a recent increase in tensions with South Korea. France 24 reported that a landmine explosion in the Demilitarised Zone on September 21 injured three South Korean soldiers. [1]

The tests follow previous military activity in the region. As FTMQ News reported earlier, North Korea launched several ballistic missiles off its east coast on Monday, detected by South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff near Pyongyang. [15]

North Korea borders South Korea at the Demilitarised Zone and shares northern borders with China and Russia along the Yalu and Tumen rivers. Its capital and largest city is Pyongyang. [13]
