NATO fighter jets were scrambled on Sunday after an unidentified flying object entered Lithuanian airspace near the Latvian border, according to Euronews. Authorities in Lithuania and the Latvian armed forces said the object was suspected to be a drone. [1]
The Latvian military stated that the scrambled fighter jets did not shoot down the suspected unmanned aerial vehicle, Euronews reported. The military added that the object possibly detonated on its own after triggering multiple air alerts in the region. Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas also commented on the dispatch of fighter jets following the airspace entry. [1]
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, states near the conflict have reported numerous violations of their airspace. Many of these incidents involve Russian military unmanned aerial vehicles and aircraft crossing into the airspace of NATO member states. [4]
Euronews reported that this event is the latest in a growing series of drone incursions along NATO's eastern flank. Officials believe many of these incidents are spillover from Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. [1]
