The Latvian Border Guard is seeking expanded powers to protect national security following a violent border crossing incident from Belarus, Euronews reported. Latvia Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava supported the proposal after a recent escalation along the frontier. [1]

Euronews reported that on October 5, a group of 20 migrants used makeshift stairs to cross into Latvia from Belarus. The migrants were led by armed, masked escorts who openly threatened Latvian soldiers during the event. Border surveillance equipment was also damaged in the hours that followed, reducing the ability to detect incursions. [1]

Latvia is a Baltic nation located in northern Europe that shares a southeastern border with Belarus. The country regained its sovereignty in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union, before joining both NATO and the European Union in 2004. [2][3]

According to Euronews, Latvia has experienced irregular migration along its border with Belarus since 2021. Officials described this recent border crossing as particularly aggressive compared to earlier incidents. [1]
