Australian batter Matt Renshaw scored 190 runs against South Africa in Durban to place Australia in control on day two of the first Test match. BBC News and ABC News Australia both reported that the career-best innings came after a wait of nine years and 280 days since his previous Test century. ABC News Australia reported that the Australian team reached a total of 390 runs in their first innings. [1][2][3][5]
BBC News reported that Renshaw faced 397 balls during his long stay at the crease. ABC News Australia added that he fell just ten runs short of a maiden Test double century. According to The Guardian, Australia had previously struggled on day one of the match, reaching 187 for six before Renshaw and captain Pat Cummins helped rebuild the innings. [1][3][4]
In response to Australia's first innings, South Africa reached 27 runs for the loss of one wicket after 18.4 overs, according to BBC Sport. Opening batter Rickelton was dismissed for a three-ball duck after being caught by Webster off the bowling of Hazlewood. South African batters Markram and Bedingham remained at the crease on 15 and 12 runs respectively. [2]
Renshaw was born in Middlesbrough, England, and was a childhood friend of England captain Joe Root before moving to New Zealand and Australia, BBC News reported. Renshaw played eleven Tests for Australia between 2016 and 2018 as an opener, before being recalled to the national Test squad in 2023 and 2026. In domestic cricket, he plays for Queensland and has featured in the Big Bash League. [1][6]
