King Charles III arrived in the Bahamas on Tuesday to begin a nine-day tour of the Caribbean, acknowledging the great suffering of the past amid calls for an official apology over the slave trade. France 24, Al Jazeera, UPI, BBC News, and the Washington Times all reported his arrival and the surrounding pressure regarding slavery reparations. France 24 noted that the 77-year-old monarch is currently undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. [1][3][4][5][6][8]

The nine-day tour will take the monarch to three countries: the Bahamas, Guyana, and Antigua and Barbuda, according to France 24, Al Jazeera, and BBC News. Al Jazeera reported that during the trip, King Charles will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, scheduled to take place from November 1 to November 4. [1][3][5]

Activists and officials in the Caribbean have warned that King Charles must address the British monarchy's historic involvement in slavery, with UPI reporting that some nations could consider removing him as head of state if he does not act. UPI added that the King will adhere to advice from the British government not to issue a formal apology, though he will not avoid discussing the issue. [1][4]

King Charles serves as the monarch of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms. In addition to addressing historical ties to slavery, France 24 reported that the King plans to highlight the severe climate threats currently facing low-lying island nations during his visits. [1][12]
