Killarney councillor calls for roadside fencing to stop roaming deer

An Irish councillor has urged authorities to fence road access points around Killarney after deer began wandering further from their usual national park habitat.

Independent councillor Brendan Cronin has called for fencing at every access point where deer can enter roads in County Kerry. Radio Kerry reported on October 13 that the call follows a growing issue of deer moving onto roadways and venturing further away from Killarney National Park than before. [1]

In response to the problem, the Department of Housing told Radio Kerry that the National Parks and Wildlife Service proposed a woodland fencing project at Knockreer inside the national park. The project aims to allow the reforestation of native woodland species. [1]

If approved, the fence would run along the N72 road between Killarney and Fossa for about 700 metres. Officials expect this barrier to act as a buffer to prevent deer from entering the road along that stretch. [1]

Killarney is located in County Kerry in southwestern Ireland at the boundary of the Iveragh Peninsula. The town sits near the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountain range and hosts Killarney National Park. [1][3]
