The Irish Examiner reported that Kerry County Council has been asked to carry out a survey to identify what is prohibiting people from living in South Kerry. Independent councillor Johnny Healy-Rae raised the issue at a meeting of the council on Wednesday. [1]
According to the Irish Examiner, Healy-Rae said that housing shortages, planning restrictions, and inadequate infrastructure are making it increasingly difficult for young people and families to remain in or move back to the region. He warned that Kenmare is losing families because of a lack of housing, despite the town featuring on a major American television programme last week. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, Kerry County Council oversees regional administration and operates out of Aras an Chontae in Tralee. The council manages various local initiatives, including development plans and community grant schemes. [3][5]
The Irish Examiner noted that councillors highlighted how young couples are currently struggling to buy or build homes in the Kenmare area. [1]
