Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch is set to address her party's annual conference in Birmingham on Wednesday, warning delegates that a battle of ideas is looming in British politics. BBC News and Yahoo both reported that Mrs Badenoch will argue the differences between the Conservatives and the governing Labour Party go to the core of what kind of country the United Kingdom wants to be. [1][4]

The speech comes as the Conservative leader seeks to reframe public perception of her party, which BBC News reported has not recovered in opinion polls since the last election. During the conference week, the party pledged 10 billion pounds for a United Kingdom air defence system. However, The Guardian reported that Mrs Badenoch denied comparing the proposal to Israel's Iron Dome system, despite the phrase appearing in press releases and a newspaper article. [1][2][3]

The Conservative Party lost power to Labour at the 2024 general election and currently forms the official opposition in Parliament. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Mrs Badenoch previously announced a 700 million pound policy ahead of the conference to extend funded childcare support to parents earning over 100,000 pounds. [7][8][9]

Addressing her party's current standing, Mrs Badenoch stated that the Conservatives are not out of the woods yet. According to The Guardian, the party leader also said she would prefer to face another general election rather than form a political coalition with Reform UK. [2]
