Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Tuesday that 500 military personnel will be deployed to Milan to secure the city following clashes and looting. Euronews, Anadolu Ajansı, Politico, and The Guardian all reported that the soldiers will receive judicial police powers to help maintain order and execute preventive measures. [1][3][4][5][7][9]

Euronews reported that Tajani announced the decision on Tuesday during the Welfare Italia Forum in Rome, where he stated that the government would respond with great firmness. Proposed actions include preventive detention measures, bans on public gatherings, and expanded authority for the deployed military troops. [1]

The unrest in Milan began after protests over the high cost of living turned violent over the weekend, according to Euronews and The Guardian. Euronews reported that the demonstrations spread to Italy after weeks of cost of living protests in neighbouring France. [1][5][7]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, police in Milan previously detained over 200 people, mostly minors, during two days of demonstrations against the rising cost of living. Officers used water cannon and tear gas to disperse crowds near the central Duomo plaza before Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called a security summit. [14]
