French authorities have introduced curfews in major cities including Paris, Bordeaux, Nice, and Lyon as police attempt to stop widespread looting and unrest. France 24 and the Daily Mail both report that demonstrations over the rising cost of living devolved into rioting over the weekend. DW adds that curfews were imposed in parts of several cities on Monday night after protests turned violent. [1][3][5][6][8]

The Daily Mail reports that demonstrations originally began over the cost of living crisis, education standards, and President Emmanuel Macron's government. Multiple cities, including Paris, have also banned protests. France 24 and the Daily Mail both report that Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said declaring a state of emergency is not out of the question. [1][3]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, ongoing student-led demonstrations over education funding and public service cuts began in Créteil on 18 September 2026. Prior unrest led to the arrest of at least 2,400 people across France and left dozens of retail stores targeted by looters. [11][12]

A curfew is an order that regulates public movement during specified hours, typically requiring individuals to stay indoors during the evening and nighttime. Authorities are using the measures to restore order after European countries warned citizens about the dangers of traveling to France. [3][10]
