Irish grocery price inflation increased to 4.69 percent in the 12 weeks to October 4, according to the Irish Examiner and RTE. Figures from Worldpanel by Numerator show that the annual food inflation rate across main supermarkets rose from 4.28 percent in the previous period. [1][2]
The latest increase follows a rise in September from 3.87 percent in August, the Irish Examiner reported. That August rate had marked the end of four straight months of easing inflation, which came as overall annual inflation hit 4.1 percent in September. [1]
Data indicates that the broader uptick in the inflation rate was driven by surging energy and oil prices, the Irish Examiner said. Meanwhile, RTE reported that the Worldpanel figure for grocery inflation is notably higher than recent official government figures. [1][2]
Shoppers can still lower their personal inflation rates by looking for promotional offers or choosing cheaper alternative brands, RTE noted. [2]
In short
- Grocery price inflation in Ireland rose to 4.69 percent in the 12 weeks to October 4.
- The grocery inflation rate stood at 4.28 percent in September.
- Higher energy and oil prices helped push overall inflation upward.
