The government has declared a severe drought across parts of southern England after a hot summer and below average rainfall in September, BBC News reported on October 15. The official status change was prompted by specific concerns over two major reservoirs, including Ardingly in West Sussex and Wimbleball in Somerset. BBC News noted that Wimbleball Reservoir serves about 300,000 properties. [1]
Ministers stated that customer water supplies will remain uninterrupted, according to BBC News. Declaring a severe drought ensures that proactive steps are taken to safeguard water before any disruption occurs. As FTMQ News reported earlier, eleven areas of England were already experiencing drought conditions, with three water companies seeking non-essential use bans on businesses. [1][10]
Under the new declaration, ministers are instructing water companies to conduct daily monitoring of river and reservoir levels alongside tougher water quality monitoring, BBC News reported. The Environment Agency will also increase compliance checks on businesses that withdraw water from natural sources to ensure they do not exceed permitted quantities. [1]
Europe experienced drought conditions and heatwaves throughout 2026, which reduced river flows and hit agriculture hard. The regional drought has also cut hydropower generation and disrupted ship movements, increasing risks to food and energy prices. [7]
