The German Bundestag voted to gradually increase tobacco taxes in a move aimed at raising an additional 12 billion euros over four years, Euronews reported. Currently, an average pack of 20 cigarettes in Germany costs approximately 8.05 euros. [1]
Under the proposed legislation, standard cigarette pack prices are expected to rise to 8.77 euros in 2027, 9.56 euros in 2028, 10.42 euros in 2029, and 11.36 euros in 2030, according to Euronews. Premium brand packs could cost as much as 14 euros, while hand rolling tobacco will also become substantially more expensive. [1]
Heated tobacco products operate by heating tobacco below 600 degrees Celsius to generate an aerosol containing nicotine, which is lower than the combustion temperature of conventional cigarettes. [3]
Euronews reported that German cigarette prices will gradually align closer with those in other European nations, although they are still expected to stay lower than prices in several neighboring countries. [1]
