A former United States Postal Service employee has pleaded guilty to stealing 34 million dollars in checks from the mail, UPI reported. Destinee Ruffin, 29, of Indianapolis, pleaded guilty on Friday to charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and theft of mail. Federal prosecutors said the scheme affected nearly 6,500 people. [1]

According to UPI, Ruffin worked as a letter carrier at the Bacon Station Post Office in Indianapolis between November 2020 and May 2022. During that period, he stole checks from both incoming and outgoing mail. Prosecutors stated that Ruffin then sold the stolen checks to accomplices. [1]

The United States Postal Inspection Service serves as the law enforcement arm of the postal system and enforces federal laws protecting mail, employees, and customers. It has roots dating back to the late 18th century, making it the oldest continuously operating federal law enforcement agency in the country. [2]
