A former senior CIA agent has pleaded guilty to stealing millions of dollars from the United States government and converting the money into gold bars.

Former senior CIA agent David J. Rush, 49, of Ashburn, Virginia, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to using his government position to steal tens of millions of dollars from the United States government, UPI reported. [1]

According to UPI, federal authorities seized hundreds of gold bars from the home of Rush in May after he converted the stolen funds into gold. Federal prosecutors did not state how long the scheme lasted. [1]

Rush is a former American intelligence official and a former member of the United States Navy Reserve. He faced charges in 2026 related to the alleged theft of government property, including foreign currency and gold bars, from the Central Intelligence Agency. [2]

UPI reported that Rush is scheduled for sentencing on January 28. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. [1]
