Former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson faces sentencing for sexual abuse

Former Democratic Unionist Party leader Jeffrey Donaldson is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday at Newry Crown Court for historical sexual offences against two children, according to reports from the Irish Examiner, the Irish Times, and TheJournal.ie. The 63-year-old former Member of Parliament for Lagan Valley will learn how long he will serve in prison from Judge Paul Ramsey. [1][2][3]

The Irish Examiner, the Irish Times, and TheJournal.ie all report that Jeffrey Donaldson was convicted in June of 18 sex offences, including one count of rape. The Irish Times and TheJournal.ie report that Judge Ramsey previously warned the former politician that he faces a lengthy sentence. According to the Irish Examiner, Jeffrey Donaldson has been held in Maghaberry Prison awaiting his sentencing, while the Irish Times specifies that the facility is located in County Antrim. [1][2][3]

The Irish Examiner also reports that the court heard details concerning offences committed between 1985 and 2008. The publication adds that his wife, 60-year-old Eleanor Donaldson, was found to have aided and abetted his crimes following a trial of the facts, which was granted on mental health grounds. [1]

Jeffrey Donaldson served as the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party from 2021 until 2024. He was born in Kilkeel, County Down, on 7 December 1962. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Jeffrey Donaldson was convicted in June 2026, and individuals face legal action for breaching lifetime anonymity orders protecting the victims in the case. [7][8][9]
