A fire burning near the main access road to the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru has left one person dead and two others injured, DW and globalnation.inquirer.net reported on Saturday. Officials confirmed that the blaze broke out in the Sacred Valley region. [1][2]

According to DW, citing Miguel Osco, the head of the Cusco Regional Office for Disaster Management, an elderly person died in the flames and two others suffered second degree burns. The fire started on Friday in the Sacred Valley of the Cusco region, which includes the Ollantaytambo train station, the busiest transit point for travelers visiting the site. [1]

Machu Picchu is a 15th century Inca citadel situated in southern Peru on a mountain ridge at 2,430 meters above sea level, located about 80 kilometers northwest of Cusco above the Sacred Valley. In the Quechua language of the Inca Empire, the name translates to old peak or old mountain. [3][5]
