Fighting between Houthis and Yemeni government deepens crisis in Taiz

Escalating clashes between Houthi rebels and Yemen's government forces have severed essential supply routes into Taiz, leaving civilian access to food, fuel, and medical aid severely restricted.

Fighting between Houthi rebels and the internationally recognised government of Yemen is deepening the humanitarian crisis in the city of Taiz, Al Jazeera reported. The city has become a new frontline in the conflict, cutting off crucial deliveries of food, fuel, and medicine. ReliefWeb also reported that intensifying military clashes in Taiz have put civilian lifelines at risk. [1][2]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Houthi military advances and road closures cut off the main access road into Taiz, causing severe shortages of food, water, and fuel for residents. Houthi forces launched a broader offensive against government troops in September 2026, while Yemeni government forces stopped in Dhubabi after Houthi troops surrounded the city. [7][8]

The Siege of Taiz is a long-running confrontation that began one month after the start of the Yemeni Civil War. Although the siege was partially lifted on 13 June 2024 when a major road was reopened, Houthi forces encircled Taiz during the 2026 Yemen offensives. In March 2015, a coalition of nine countries led by Saudi Arabia launched a military intervention after Houthi forces ousted President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi from Sanaa in September 2014. [4][5][6]

The ongoing war erupted in 2014 when the Iran-backed Houthi militia took control of northern and western Yemen, including the capital city of Sanaa. Conflict escalated after United Nations efforts to negotiate a power-sharing arrangement failed, leading to full-scale warfare across the region. [4][6][7]
