Los Angeles election officials have no independent mechanism to verify if voters are United States citizens beyond taking their word for it, according to the New York Post. Bill Essayli, the First Assistant US Attorney for the Central District of California, criticized the state over the lack of election safeguards. [1]
Essayli warned that the votes of eligible Americans are being diluted because of the gap in verification procedures. The statement highlights ongoing disputes over how state election authorities confirm the eligibility of individuals on voter rolls. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, US District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan ruled that the Justice Department cannot force states to submit voter rolls to verify citizenship through immigration databases. The judge declared the Justice Department initiative unconstitutional in a 78-page ruling ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. [2]
