European Union seeks direct role in upcoming Ukraine peace talks

The European Union is seeking a greater role in peace negotiations to end Russia's war on Ukraine, Euronews reported on October 23. Brussels wants to transform the upcoming round of trilateral peace talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States into a multilateral format that includes European representation. [1]

According to Euronews, the United States wants to resume technical level trilateral talks in November following its midterm elections. Ukraine stated that it welcomes any format at any time, while Russia indicated that it is ready in principle to join the discussions. [1]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, United States Vice President JD Vance confirmed that Ukraine and Russia agreed to resume talks mediated by the United States, though he warned a final deal remains far off. US envoy Steve Witkoff previously met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saint Petersburg, leading to an agreement for the technical level meeting. [3][4]

The peace process stalled in February after the United States launched its war on Iran and shifted its diplomatic focus to the Middle East, Euronews reported. Brussels views the possible resumption of negotiations as an opportunity to secure direct contact with Moscow and expand its influence over the talks. [1]
