The European Union has demanded that Britain pay financial contributions and accept oversight from European Union judges in exchange for help with the English Channel migrant crisis, the Daily Mail reported. Prime Minister Andy Burnham intends to negotiate access to European Union migrant and criminal databases at a summit next month. [1][3]
Britain lost access to the security databases after leaving the European Union. EU Today reported that Andy Burnham is preparing for the Brussels summit as part of efforts to establish closer relations with the bloc. According to the Daily Mail, European officials are insisting that the Luxembourg based European Court of Justice must oversee how Britain uses the shared data. [1][2]
Andy Burnham became Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party in July 2026 after winning the parliamentary seat of Makerfield in June 2026. He previously served as the Mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 until 2026. [3]
The issue of Channel crossings remains a key focus in British politics. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage recently rejected claims that a future government would authorize the military to use lethal force against migrant boats. [7]
