European Union Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic has arrived in Beijing for trade talks with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Al Jazeera reported. The discussions come after months of debate over the growing trade imbalance between the two regions. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the European Commission opened negotiations in June and established an October deadline for progress. [1][5]

Al Jazeera reported that the meetings will focus on an EU trade deficit with China of more than 1 billion euros, or 1.12 billion dollars, every day. FTMQ News previously noted that the EU trade deficit with China reached a record 1 billion euros daily according to Euronews, while earlier reporting also cited the trade surplus as 1 billion pounds a day. The discussions will also address Chinese restrictions on exports of rare earths and critical minerals. [1][5][6]

The negotiations take place as Chinese businesses increasingly challenge leading European automobile brands, according to Al Jazeera. China rejected an EU request for voluntary limits on Chinese hybrid car exports as both sides began talks, citing the Financial Times. Earlier FTMQ News reports noted that EU officials are seeking an agreement to limit cheap hybrid electric vehicle imports as member states increase demands for protection against Chinese goods. [1][5][6]

Beijing drives national growth through high-tech industries, finance, and services, generating a gross regional product of 4.98 trillion yuan in 2024. Meanwhile, China has been involved in an economic conflict with the United States since January 2018, when tariffs were introduced over trade deficit concerns and technology transfer practices.
