ESA Spacecraft Juice Completes Earth Gravity Assist Maneuver Toward Jupiter
The European Space Agency spacecraft Juice performed an Earth flyby on September 28 to alter its course toward Jupiter and conserve fuel.

The European Space Agency spacecraft named Juice passed close by Earth on September 28, using the gravity of the planet to alter its path toward Jupiter. ScienceDaily reported that the flyby changed the direction of the spacecraft by 20 degrees and increased its speed by 3.5 kilometres per second while consuming very little fuel. Silicon Republic reported that this flyby was the third gravity assist completed by the mission. [1][2]
During the close pass, the spacecraft skimmed the outer atmosphere of Earth and recorded images with its monitoring and navigation cameras, according to ScienceDaily and freeyork. ScienceDaily added that the flyby provided scientists with a rare opportunity to test instruments on Earth and the Moon. [1][4]
The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer was developed by the European Space Agency to orbit and analyze three icy moons of Jupiter, specifically Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. These moons are key targets because they are thought to hold significant bodies of liquid water below their frozen surfaces, making them potentially habitable. A gravity assist is a spaceflight maneuver that uses the movement and gravity of an astronomical object to adjust spacecraft trajectory and velocity to save propellant. [5][7]
